Word-of-mouth leads in Detroit - any advice?

Two small Detroit employers told me they are hiring but have not posted yet. This is my first time dealing with any of this. They like a brief email with a résumé. Does anyone have similar leads?

Small employers often hire on recommendation. Ask neighbours, former co-workers and your library.
