Word-of-mouth leads in Chicago - 11 months and counting

Two small Chicago employers told me they are hiring but have not posted yet. Any experience at all would help. They prefer people who can start within a couple of weeks. Should I visit in person?

Thanks for writing this out. I went through something close to it 11 months ago, and it settled down once I kept a simple log of every call and form.
