Small employers hiring around St. Louis - any advice?

A friend who works at a local manufacturer says there are openings not advertised online. It has been a long 22 weeks. They prefer people who can start within a couple of weeks. Should I visit in person?

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It saved me later.
