Second-chance employers near Chicago after 4 years as a teaching assistant

A few employers in Chicago say they hire people with a record, including a manufacturer and a warehouse. There are 4 people counting on me, so I am trying to be careful. They still run a background check later but consider it case by case. Did they ask about it in the interview?
