Public-sector jobs open for Dallas residents - any advice?

The city and county near Dallas both posted administrative and maintenance openings this week. This is my first time dealing with any of this. Applications close on a fixed date and need a full work history. Anyone applied for one?

Thanks for writing this out. I went through something close to it 8 months ago, and it settled down once I kept a simple log of every call and form.
