Part-time jobs that fit around childcare - what worked for you?

A grocery chain and a hotel near Omaha are hiring part-time staff. Any experience at all would help. They can give a schedule two weeks ahead. Has anyone worked these shifts?

Thanks for writing this out. I went through something close to it last year, and it settled down once I kept a simple log of every call and form.
