Part-time jobs that fit around childcare - 2 months and counting

I am looking for part-time work that fits around school hours and found a few evening shifts near Detroit. This is my first time dealing with any of this. They can give a schedule two weeks ahead. Is the schedule really fixed?

Thanks for writing this out. I went through something close to it last year, and it settled down once I kept a simple log of every call and form.
