Jobs at small San Diego companies nobody posts about - any advice?

I asked around at a community meeting and got three leads. I have been trying to stay organised about it. They like a brief email with a résumé.

Keep a list of who you contacted and when. It makes follow-ups easy.

Visiting in person worked for a trades job. For office jobs, email was better.
