Flexible shifts hiring in San Diego - any advice?

A grocery chain and a hotel near San Diego are hiring part-time staff. I do not usually post, so bear with me. Some roles have a small tuition benefit. Has anyone worked these shifts?

Ask whether the schedule is posted in advance and how they handle swaps. It matters a lot with kids.
