Flexible shifts hiring in Birmingham - what worked for you?

A grocery chain and a hotel near Birmingham are hiring part-time staff. I am in Birmingham, in case local advice matters. Shifts are four to six hours and the pay is weekly. Has anyone worked these shifts?

Ask whether the schedule is posted in advance and how they handle swaps. It matters a lot with kids.
