Employers that hire people with a record, Detroit - any advice?

I got a lead on a company that does not ask about convictions on the first application. Any experience at all would help. They still run a background check later but consider it case by case. Any other leads?

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It saved me later.
