Employers that hire people with a record, Birmingham - any advice?

I got a lead on a company that does not ask about convictions on the first application. This is my first time dealing with any of this. The HR contact was kind and direct. Has anyone worked at these places?

Ask the workforce centre about bonding programmes. They sometimes help employers feel comfortable.
