City government openings this month - any advice?

The city and county near Detroit both posted administrative and maintenance openings this week. I worked as a customer-service rep before this. Hiring is slower than private jobs. Anyone applied for one?

Thanks for writing this out. I went through something close to it last year, and it got easier once I kept a simple log of every call and form.
