Transit passes and rides for job seekers - what worked for you?

I need a cheap way to get to several appointments. Any experience at all would help. I can walk part of the way. Are there discounted passes?

Thanks for writing this out. I went through something close to it 9 months ago, and it settled down once I kept a simple log of every call and form.
