This community helped me more than I expected (Louisville)

I posted here 15 weeks ago when I was panicking about my layoff as a teaching assistant. There are 7 people counting on me, so I am trying to be careful. Two tips made a real difference: keeping a log and asking for help early. What would help newcomers most?
