I am tracking my applications in a notebook and want something better. I would rather hear the honest version than the polite one. A spreadsheet with dates and follow-ups worked a little.

A simple spreadsheet with company, date, contact and next step was all I needed.

Use a plain one-column résumé with standard headings. Mine got more replies after I simplified it.
