Phone and internet help for people out of work - what worked for you?

I use my phone as my only connection. I have been trying to stay organised about it. I heard of low-cost plans for people with limited income. What else should I consider?

Libraries lend Wi-Fi hotspots in some towns. Mine lent one for three weeks.

Thanks for writing this out. I went through something close to it 4 months ago, and it got easier once I kept a simple log of every call and form.
