Phone and internet help for people out of work - any advice?

I use my phone as my only connection. I worked as a call-centre agent before this. I heard of low-cost plans for people with limited income. What else should I consider?

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It made the follow-up calls so much easier.
