Keeping my phone on while I search (update)

I am worried about keeping my phone and internet on during my search. I heard of low-cost plans for people with limited income. What else should I consider?

Libraries lend Wi-Fi hotspots in some towns. Mine lent one for three weeks.

I switched to a low-cost plan through my carrier and cut my bill by almost half.
