Keeping my phone on while I search - any advice?

I am worried about keeping my phone and internet on during my search. I worked as an event coordinator before this. I heard of low-cost plans for people with limited income. What else should I consider?

I switched to a low-cost plan through my carrier and cut my bill by almost half.
