Getting to interviews without a car in Chicago after 16 years as a mechanic

The bus takes almost an hour to reach the places hiring as a mechanic. Any experience at all would help. I can walk part of the way. What do you use?

Our transit agency has a reduced-fare pass for people with low income. The application took a week.
