Budgeting tips when income drops - any advice?

My income is now a fraction of what it was as a copywriter and I am trying to cover the essentials. I would rather hear the honest version than the polite one. I listed needs and wants and cut a few subscriptions. What helped you?

Check for energy assistance programmes. I got a credit that covered two bills.
