Best tools for tracking applications? - what worked for you?

I am tracking my applications in a notebook and want something better. It has been a long 12 weeks. I do not want to pay for premium features.

Thanks for writing this out. I went through something close to it 10 months ago, and it got easier once I kept a simple log of every call and form.
