Best tools for tracking applications? after 4 years as a call-centre agent

I am tracking my applications in a notebook and want something better. I would rather hear the honest version than the polite one. A spreadsheet with dates and follow-ups worked a little. What do you use?

A simple spreadsheet with company, date, contact and next step was all I needed.
