Best tools for tracking applications? - 6 weeks in

I am looking for free tools that do not spam me. I worked as a data-entry clerk before this. A spreadsheet with dates and follow-ups worked a little. Are there tools to avoid?

Thanks for writing this out. I went through something close to it last year, and it settled down once I kept a simple log of every call and form.
