Worth paying for a certificate? - what worked for you?

I am considering a short certificate to improve my chances as a line cook. I am in Madison, in case local advice matters. I would like to use funding if possible. Did a certificate help you get hired?

The workforce centre told me about training funds I qualified for. It covered most of my course.
