Worth paying for a certificate?

I am considering a short certificate to improve my chances as an accounts payable clerk. There are 16 people counting on me, so I am trying to be careful. I am unsure whether employers value it. Did a certificate help you get hired?

A hands-on course with a project helped more than a purely online one.

Check a dozen job postings first. If most ask for the same certificate, it is probably worth it.
