Who do I ask for a reference after a layoff? - what worked for you?

My manager was laid off too and I am unsure who to use as a reference. I worked as a school bus driver before this. I have one former client who liked my work. Is a client acceptable?

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It saved me later.
