Who do I ask for a reference after a layoff? - any advice?

I worry a reference will only confirm dates of employment. It has been a long 21 weeks. A colleague offered to vouch for me. Who did you use?

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It made the follow-up calls so much easier.
