Who do I ask for a reference after a layoff? after 8 years as a delivery driver

I worry a reference will only confirm dates of employment. I would rather hear the honest version than the polite one. HR only confirms titles and dates. Who did you use?

Use a professional network to find a former manager. Many will still write a note.
