Who do I ask for a reference after a layoff? after 5 years as a line cook

My manager was laid off too and I am unsure who to use as a reference. Thank you in advance. I have one former client who liked my work. Is a client acceptable?

Use a professional network to find a former manager. Many will still write a note.
