Who do I ask for a reference after a layoff? after 4 years as an accounts payable clerk

I worry a reference will only confirm dates of employment. There are 4 people counting on me, so I am trying to be careful. I have one former client who liked my work. Is a client acceptable?

Use a professional network to find a former manager. Many will still write a note.

I kept a note of my results so my references could be specific. They appreciated it.
