Who do I ask for a reference after a layoff? after 3 years as a copywriter

I worry a reference will only confirm dates of employment. I am in Detroit, in case local advice matters. HR only confirms titles and dates. Is a client acceptable?

Use a professional network to find a former manager. Many will still write a note.
