Who do I ask for a reference after a layoff? after 16 years as a school bus driver

I worry a reference will only confirm dates of employment. HR only confirms titles and dates. Is a client acceptable?

Ask former colleagues and supervisors in a short message and give them a summary of the job you are applying for.

Use a professional network to find a former manager. Many will still write a note.
