Weighing a contract offer against waiting - any advice?

I got a contract offer for 17 months as a retail manager and I am unsure whether to accept. Any experience at all would help. The contract could extend. What would you do?

If savings are low, I would accept and keep applying. You can leave for a permanent role if one appears.

I took a contract and it converted after four months. The time also kept my skills current.
