Temp-to-hire offer, worth it? - what worked for you?

I got a contract offer for 8 months as a customer-service rep and I am unsure whether to accept. I am in Salt Lake City, in case local advice matters. I would gain recent experience. How did you handle benefits?

I took a contract and it converted after four months. The time also kept my skills current.
