Temp-to-hire offer, worth it? - what worked for you?

I got a contract offer for 18 months as an electrician's helper and I am unsure whether to accept. I worked as an electrician's helper before this. I would gain recent experience. Did a contract become permanent?

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It made the follow-up calls so much easier.
