Temp-to-hire offer, worth it? (update)

I got a contract offer for 18 months as a machine operator and I am unsure whether to accept. The contract could extend. How did you handle benefits?

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It made the follow-up calls so much easier.
