Temp-to-hire offer, worth it? after 7 years as an accounts payable clerk

I got a contract offer for 7 months as an accounts payable clerk and I am unsure whether to accept. I am in Chicago, in case local advice matters. The contract could extend. Did a contract become permanent?

I took a contract and it converted after four months. The time also kept my skills current.
