Salary expectations: how do you answer? - what worked for you?

I have been out of work for 4 weeks and feel pressure to accept less. I am in Portland, in case local advice matters. I do not want to price myself out.

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It made the follow-up calls so much easier.
