Salary expectations: how do you answer? - what worked for you?

A recruiter asked for my salary expectations on a first call as I look for work as an accounts payable clerk. I am in Baltimore, in case local advice matters. I do not want to price myself out.

Asking about the range for the role first worked for me. Some recruiters share it.

Benefits matter too. A slightly lower rate with better coverage was better for me.
