Salary expectations: how do you answer? - what worked for you?

I have been out of work for 18 weeks and feel pressure to accept less. I do not usually post, so bear with me. I looked up ranges in Atlanta and they vary a lot. Does giving a range hurt?

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It made the follow-up calls so much easier.
