Salary expectations: how do you answer? after 14 years as a software tester

Amara Hovland · 2026-09-12T22:25:18.877Z

A recruiter asked for my salary expectations on a first call as I look for work as a software tester. It has been a long 4 weeks. I do not want to price myself out. How do you research fairly?

Asking about the range for the role first worked for me. Some recruiters share it.

Benefits matter too. A slightly lower rate with better coverage was better for me.
