References when my manager was laid off too - what worked for you?

The company closed and I am not sure how to reach former colleagues. I do not usually post, so bear with me. HR only confirms titles and dates. Is a client acceptable?

Use a professional network to find a former manager. Many will still write a note.

A client reference worked well for me. It shows you deliver outside the company too.
