References when my manager was laid off too - what worked for you?

I worry a reference will only confirm dates of employment. It has been weighing on me all week. HR only confirms titles and dates. Who did you use?

A client reference worked well for me. It shows you deliver outside the company too.

I kept a note of my results so my references could be specific. They appreciated it.
