References when my manager was laid off too, welding apprentice here

I worry a reference will only confirm dates of employment. I have one former client who liked my work. Is a client acceptable?

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It made the follow-up calls so much easier.

A client reference worked well for me. It shows you deliver outside the company too.
