References when my manager was laid off too (update)

I worry a reference will only confirm dates of employment. I have been trying to stay organised about it. A colleague offered to vouch for me. Is a client acceptable?

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It made the follow-up calls so much easier.
