References when my manager was laid off too - any advice?

I worry a reference will only confirm dates of employment. This is my first time dealing with any of this. HR only confirms titles and dates. Is a client acceptable?

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It made the follow-up calls so much easier.
