References when my manager was laid off too after 17 years as a marketing coordinator

I worry a reference will only confirm dates of employment. I worked as a marketing coordinator before this. A colleague offered to vouch for me. Who did you use?

A client reference worked well for me. It shows you deliver outside the company too.
