References when my manager was laid off too

I worry a reference will only confirm dates of employment. I worked as a software tester before this. HR only confirms titles and dates. Who did you use?

A client reference worked well for me. It shows you deliver outside the company too.

Use a professional network to find a former manager. Many will still write a note.
